France Protest Escalate as Students, Parent, and Unions, Demands More Investment in Schools.
Protests over what demonstrators describe as inadequate investment in French high schools have intensified, with students, parents and trade unions taking to the streets across the country.
Hundreds of schools have been blockaded over the past week as protesters demand increased funding and better conditions in the education sector. At least 215 people have been injured, while more than 5,000 people have been arrested during the demonstrations.
In the northern city of Lille, students gathered outside schools on Tuesday, with some carrying banners calling for greater investment in education.
The demonstrations have also seen incidents of unrest, including bins being set on fire, according to reports from BBC
Also in Paris, protesters have used the demonstrations to express frustration with the government’s response. Some carried banners reading “We want to be heard, not teargassed” and “Our future is not optional.”
The protests have also been marked by serious injuries where ,On Monday, a student in the northern city of Lens reportedly picked up a police stun grenade and suffered severe injuries, with reports saying his hand was blown off.
The incident has added to concerns over the use of police equipment during the demonstrations and the growing risks faced by protesters.
The French government says 715 police officers have been injured since protests began in Paris in late September.
The demonstrations have therefore created mounting pressure on authorities as clashes between protesters and police continue in several parts of the country.
Students and their supporters say the protests are ultimately about the future of education and are demanding that the government increase investment in high schools.
With demonstrations continuing across France, authorities now face the challenge of addressing protesters’ demands while restoring calm to streets and school campuses.
