Leader from Kajiado county have urged Kenya Wildlife Service {KWS} to speed up investigation over the death of 14 elephants in Amboseli National Park .
They also demanded for publicly releasing of the findings, warning that the incident is a direct threat to elephant population in the country.
The leaders lead by Kajiado county Governor Joseph Ole Lenku have accused KWS for failing to release important information to the public ,when carcases involving animals of different sexes and ages were found in various locations, in Amboseli National Park in June 2026.
Speaking to media after a consultative meeting with KWS officials, the leaders said that the deaths were unprecedented and had caused anxiety among local communities, who have coexisted with wild animals in the neighbouring areas for many years.
“The park is dying, las week i announced the death of 14 elephants within a span of 3 weeks. we have never seen this happen.” Ole Lenku said.
The leaders demanded that KWS release the results of laboratory tests conducted on samples collected from the carcasses immediately, emphasising that the elephants are a shared heritage between the government and local communities.
” We want the report, because KWS have taken samples. we want to know what killed our 14 Elephants. It never happened.”
KWS officials lead by Duncan Juma, KWS Head of communication confirmed that investigation is ongoing as samples collected by veterinary team are being analysed in kajiado. Adding that they are awaiting cientific outcome so as to be in position to give conclusion.
This comes days even before tension settles between KWS and Kajiado leaders on management of Amboseli National Park, being a global well known conservation area for large elephants heards and the beauty view of mount Kilimanjaro.
